As the fire roared in front of us and our stomachs were filled with our favorite foods, I wanted to share more stories with Starr. The Eastern Band of Cherokee were my people, and I was proud of my heritage. After a year of hiding from my past, I wanted to somehow hint at my true nature without actually telling her.
“There’s a story about the moon and the sun,” I said. “Would you like to hear it?”
“Duh,” she said. “I love listening to you.”
“The Sun was practicing hard to find his medicine. He spent his days and nights searching for the great spiritual lake, Attagahi. He was very serious and not interested in other pursuits. During the time of the month when the sky goes dark, and there is no moon, the Sun took on a lover. She’d visit him each month at the same time. They’d spend hours talking about all sorts of things.
The Sun fell deeply in love. He wanted to see his lover’s face, but she always left before the light came. No matter how many times he begged her to stay, she would always disappear. The Sun became more and more desperate to discover her identity. He devised a plan to find out who she was.
At the next visit, his lover came to him shaking in anticipation. He reached into the fire and grabbed some ash without her knowing. Then he reached up and touched her face. He told her that her face felt cold from her journey. They talked the hours away like they always did, and the visit was much too short, like it always was. He begged her to stay, but she refused and told him she would come again next month. When she was gone, he quickly ran out and searched the sky for his lover. When he looked up, the Sun noticed the Moon had ashy spots on her face.
The Sun realized the Moon was his lover. The Moon was so embarrassed to be discovered that she went as far away from the Sun as she possibly could. When the Moon has to get close to the Sun, she makes her self very thin so he can barely see her, but she keeps the ashy spots on her face in remembrance of the only time the Sun, her true love, ever touched her.”
When I finished, Starr looked over at me. “Do you think that’s us? Is that our story?”
I cradled her face in my hands. The Moon gave me strength. The Sun gave me life. Both were needed to strike the balance for my people’s true nature.
“It’s not us, because we have something the Moon and the Sun don’t have.”
She sucked in a breath. “What’s that?”
“Each other.”
